Florida Car Insurance And The No-Fault Ruling - Can You Save Money?
Florida car insurance, for just a moment, changed when the No-fault law expired on October 1, 2007. However the legislature voted to re-enact the law beginning January 1, 2008 with some reforms. As a Florida driver, can you save money on your car insurance?
The reforms are intended to reduce medical costs, the amount of litigation and fraud. Rates were not changed, but keep in mind that rates can vary from one insurance company to the next. One of the best ways to lower your car insurance costs is to shop around for comparison quotes. This could save you hundreds.
According to the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America, starting January 1, 2008 vehicle owners will need to carry a minimum of $10,000 Personal Injury Protection (PIP) coverage and a minimum of $10,000 in Personal Damage Liability (PDL).
Though Bodily Injury coverage isn't currently required by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles in order to register your vehicle, you will be penalized if you are in an accident that hurts someone and don't have this coverage. You may also want to consider uninsured and underinsured coverage.
Besides shopping around for lower quotes, you can also save by taking advantage of discounts such as multi-policy (two types of insurance with the same company), good student (especially for teenage drivers), anti-theft device, senior driver, low mileage and more. Increasing your deductibles can lower your insurance costs quite a bit as well.
When you request quotes, make sure to provide the same information about coverages and deductibles that you want to each company or agent. That way you'll get the most accurate comparisons. Have your existing policy ready, or write down the coverages, deductibles and vehicle information on a piece of paper.
A site comparing insurance can save you time, because usually only enter information once, and then you can go back quotes from several companies and agents. It is recommended to get at least three different quotes.
